2017-2018
SWMS Orchestra Winter Concert
Thursday, November 30th
7:00 PM
6th, 7th and 8th Grade
Stevens HS Auditorium
Arrival time for Students between 6:30 PM and 6:45 PM
What: SWMS Winter Concert for 6th 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra
When: Thursday, November 30th at 7:00 PM (Students arrive between 6:30 PM and 6:45 PM)
Where: Stevens High School Auditorium
Students will need to bring their instrument and any supplies such as rosin, a shoulder rest or a rock stop to Stevens for the concert. Cellos, Basses and Harp will be bringing their instruments over to Stevens HS in the morning for a combined rehearsal in the auditorium. This is during the school day, and so the students will need to bring their instruments to school. If they happened to have siblings that go to Stevens or could arrange some other form of transport, it is allowed (and encouraged) for them to drop their instruments off at the Stevens HS Auditorium that morning. Keep in mind that the 7th and 8th grade rehearsal is in the morning from roughly 8:15 AM to 9:45 AM, so their instrument would need to be transported earlier than 8:15 AM. Mr. Evans will be aware of the arrangement, so access to that portion of Stevens in the morning should be no problem. If you have further questions regarding this, you can email me at [email protected] to get clarification. The 6th grade rehearsal is in the afternoon starting around 12:30 PM, but instruments can still be dropped off in the morning.
Transportation to Stevens HS during the school day will be provided by bus. Transportation to the concert in the evening will need to be provided by you, the parent.
That evening, students should show up no later than 6:45 PM prior to the concert. This allows them ample time to warm up, tune, and make sure they have everything they need for the concert. Both orchestras are required to stay for the other group's performance. The concert itself should be no longer than an hour, probably closer to 40 minutes, so I do not anticipate this to be an issue.
Dress code for the concert is business casual to semi-formal. You don't need to get out the Evening Gown or the Tuxedo, but a dress and/or a button-down and tie wouldn't be out of place in the slightest. Absolutely no sweat pants or athletic shorts, nor should jeans be worn if at all possible.
The concert is a very important part of the Orchestra curriculum, and any absences from it need to be approved by Mr. Weseloh. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact me.
I am very excited to present this program for you, and I know that the kids will do a fantastic job! They have been working very hard, and I know they are looking forward to show you the fruits of their labor! See you on Thursday Night!

6th Grade Informance 16th of October @ 6:30 PM
Southwest Middle School Multipurpose Room
7th/8th Grade Feature Night 19th of October @ 6:30 PM
Southwest Middle School Multipurpose Room
The First Performances of the year will be held in the Southwest Middle School Multipurpose Room (Otherwise known as the Cafeteria). Below you will find more detailed information on these events, and what they entail!
6th Grade Informance:
The 6th Grade Informance is a chance for you, the parents/guardians/siblings/grandparents/etc... to get a taste of a day in 6th Grade Orchestra Class! We will walk you through our daily routines, some snippets of pieces we may be working on and there will be a surprise at the end with some audience participation involved! Afterwards we will have some refreshments and some time to socialize with your fellow 6th Grade Orchestra Fans!
What do the students need to bring?
Their instruments from home (Violins, Violas, Cellos)
Rockstops for Cellos and Basses
What should they wear?
The Informance is a less formal affair than other concerts, so whatever they wore for the school day is perfectly acceptable! That said, when in doubt, business casual is always appreciated!
When do they need to show up?
The Informance will begin at 6:30 pm, which means that students should show up between 6:00 pm and 6:45 pm. Mr. Weseloh will be in the building by 5:30, so if it is necessary to show up earlier, he will be around (and may put to work any who venture in, as well).
Any other questions, comments and concerns may be addressed to Mr. Weseloh. More information will be given on the Informance closer to the concert date.
7th and 8th Grade Feature Night
The 7th and 8th grade feature night is new this year, and will give the 7th and 8th graders a chance to show their skills, both as an ensemble and as individuals! The 7th and 9th grade Orchestra will play a piece they have prepared together, and individual students and student-led small groups will also perform! This is a night that gives our marvelous SWMS Orchestra students a chance to shine, and I am very excited to see what the evening will bring!
What do the students need to bring?
Their instruments from home.
Rockstops for Cellos and Basses and any other necessary equipment.
What should they wear?
As this is a feature night, I suggest business casual for the attire (slacks/skirts or dresses and a nice shirt/blouse). The students do not need to be as formal as they would for a concert at Stevens or the Civic Center, but should be representing themselves well, especially if performing a solo or in a small group.
When do they need to show up?
The Feature night will begin at 6:30 pm, and students should be there between 6:00 pm and 6:15 pm. Mr. Weseloh will be at the school starting at 5:30 pm, so if necessary, students may show up as early as that time. The front doors will be open for your use as well as the doors that lead directly into the Multipurpose room. The program should be no more than an hour, and refreshments will be available after the show!
More details to come closer to the concert date, stay tuned!

Line up for Concert 6:15 pm 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm
7th and 8th grade students will need to be dropped off by 7:30 am at the civic center on Friday, March 18th. They will be bussed back to Southwest after their rehearsal is finished, and they will be picked up there at the end of the school day. Cello and Bass Students will need their instruments from home/arrange something with Mr. Weseloh. Students should also bring their practice copies of music from home to their rehearsal.
6th Grade Students will need to bring a sack lunch to school on Friday, March 18th. They will not have time to go through the lunch line at Southwest, but will be given time to eat their lunch either at the civic center or on the bus to their rehearsal. 6th grade students will also need to bring their Cellos/Basses from home, unless they have pre-arranged an alternative action with Mr. Weseloh.
Packets for individual pictures will be handed out at Friday's rehearsal, and these individual pictures will be taken Saturday throughout the day (see chart above for specific times per grade level)
The final rehearsals are also where we will take the large group pictures, so dress nicely (wear what you will for the concert if you wish!) for the final rehearsal. Dress code for the concert is, at the very least, business casual, but preferably semi-formal. A Shirt and tie with slacks for the guys and a dress/skirt/slacks and a nice top for the girls is recommended/appreciated. Remember that what is worn onstage is representing the school you come from as well as the orchestra program across Rapid City.
Students need to be at the Civic Center with instruments out and tuned and ready to go by their line up times listed on the chart above. Details on procedure will be given during rehearsals on Friday and Saturday.
Please refer to your Green sheets for more information, and I look forward to a fantastic concert this weekend!

------------------------------------------------------------Strings in Concert Auditions------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday March 14th
Central High School Fine Arts Wing (East Entrance, facing the Civic Center)
3:30-6:30 p.m. (Individual times for each auditionee)
Its that time of year again! Students 5-8th grade are auditioning for Strings in Concert at Central High School on Tuesday, the 14th of March! To clarify, this audition is not to see if they get into the orchestra, but rather to determine their chair placement in their respective sections. This is to ensure that each of the orchestras produce the best sound and give the best show possible to our fantastic audience (YOU!)
I am attaching the documents for the audition times, and you can search for your kiddos name depending on which grade they are in and which instrument they play! I would recommend getting to Central at least 20 minutes early to allow time to warm up, find the room and prepare for the audition. Audition spots will be given when the student goes in for their audition. It will be music that has been rehearsed in class prior to the audition, so it won't be anything new! All audition spots will be the same for each grade and instrument type (i.e. 6th grade violas will all play the same audition sections)
Please remember to also pick up your T-shirts at the T-shirt tables at Auditions! There will be parent volunteers there helping pass out the T-shirts for each of the schools, so look for the area with your school name!

--------------------------------------7th and 8th Grade Solo and Ensemble Contest--------------------------------------------
Wednesday February 15th
3:00 p.m. Southwest Middle School (various rooms)
Solo and Ensemble Contest is taking place at Southwest Middle School this year, instead of Central High School. Hopefully this will help avoid some confusion as to where to go and how to get there, and it also means that students from Southwest are going to be first on the docket to perform. Below you can find information on which students perform and what times, as well as some information on procedure for the contest itself. As a note, not all students are participating in this contest, so do not be concerned if you do not see a name listed here.
Students should try to arrive at least 15-20 minutes before their scheduled time, to allow for adequate time to unpack, tune, retrieve music and find their room. Students will unpack instruments in the Southwest Multipurpose Room (Cafeteria) and this is also where they will be able to warm up and tune. The rooms that are being utilized for performances are the Choir, Band, and Orchestra rooms as well as the Corral Drive Music Room and two Eighth Grade Classrooms. Where specific students are supposed to go will be posted at various places in the multipurpose room, in the hallway and on the doors of the rooms being utilized. Middle School Orchestra Teachers will be available throughout the event to help you if you are having trouble.
Students should be sure to bring their instrument, music and anything else they need to perform. Stands will be provided in the rooms. Students should also be sure to retrieve their Judges Copy from Mr. Weseloh to give to the Judge prior to performing. This is true of both Solos and Ensembles. The Southwest Students should be performing from 3:00 p.m. until roughly 4:30 p.m. . Times may go longer in the event that a room gets behind, but otherwise we are going to try our hardest to keep every room on schedule throughout the event. Please be at the room you are supposed to be performing in and ready at least 5 minutes before you are supposed to enter. This will make sure that no time is lost waiting for students to arrive.
The following are the playing times and room schedules for the students, both Solos and Ensembles.

____________________________ WINTER CONCERT DECEMBER 1st____________________________________
__________________________ 7:00 pm Stevens High School Auditorium _________________________________
Information for Parents
Students of all grades will be rehearsing during the day at Stevens in the auditorium. Cellos and Basses need to bring their instruments from home (except for in pre-arranged circumstances) or have them dropped of at the Stevens High School Auditorium in the morning prior to the start of the school day. The Auditorium can be most easily accessed through the West side parking lot doors. Instruments dropped off should be placed on or near the stage. I will be leaving a sign that tells you where this location would be. Mr. Evans, the Stevens High School Director, is aware of this arrangement, but will be involved with rehearsal during the morning, and so will most likely not be able to assist with directions.
Dress Code for the concert is business casual or, more simply put, no Jeans, Sweats or Shorts. Look nice! Ties are not necessary, but absolutely acceptable. For the ladies, if wearing leggings, preferably have a skirt, dress or other covering overtop. The students should look respectable and performance ready, otherwise the choice of what to wear is entirely up to you!
That night, students may arrive between 6:15 and 6:45. I would prefer that all students are at the building by 6:30, to allow for ample time to warm up, tune and be ready to perform. 6:45 is the latest that the students should show up. There will be Stevens High School orchestra students available to assist with tuning. The Stevens Band Rooms will be available for the students to warm up and tune in. The Large Band Room is for 7th and 8th grade students, and the Small Band Room is for the 6th grade students to warm up in. If all else fails, the student should look for their classmates.
The concert will begin at 7:00 pm with the 6th grade orchestra. The 7th and 8th grade orchestra will be seated in the audience in a reserved section until the 6th grade has completed their portion of the concert. After a very brief transition, the 7th and 8th grade orchestra will perform their portion of the concert. Once they are finished, students are free to pack up their instruments and leave. All Cellos and Basses (except any that I have brought over from Southwest) need to be taken out of the Stevens Auditorium after the concert.
I am very excited for this concert, and I look forward to seeing you in the audience!
